Firefighters Discuss Response to Las Vegas Blaze

Fire suppression systems are credited with helping contain fire at Cosmopolitan

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) – Firefighters said they train for blazes like the one at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas hotel-casino Saturday. The fire at the Bamboo Pool area on the 14th floor started around 12:15 p.m. Saturday and Clark County firefighters had the blaze under control within a half hour. The fire spread quickly due to fake palm trees and other synthetic materials around the pool.110 firefighters responded to the blaze.

“Here with the palm trees just because they are all synthetic, they are metal poles wrapped in foam and plastic, they burn very very hot, and they basically were melting,” said firefighter Robert Marquis. “And there was a lot of flames coming from a lot of thick black smoke.” Only one person was injured and was treated for smoke inhalation. Another challenge the firefighters faced was the blaze being up 14 flights of stairs. “They did a terrific job, and again all of the valley fire departments have gotten together to create a high-rise plan and the high-rise plan places certain people in strategic locations to lay a great foundation for getting started on a high-rise situation,” said Clark County Fire Battalion Chief Erik Poleski Sunday.
